IWC Portugieser: Seven-Day Automatic or Perpetual Calendar

The Portugieser is the largest watch that has ever passed for dressy, and the gap between the seven-day and the perpetual is not really about the calendar.

The origin story is unusually good, and unusually true. In the late 1930s two Portuguese merchants approached IWC wanting wristwatches with the accuracy of a marine chronometer. At the time, that level of precision existed only in pocket watch movements. IWC's solution was to put a pocket watch movement in a wristwatch case.

The result was a watch far larger than anything else on a wrist in 1939, with a clean railway-track dial, slim leaf hands, and Arabic numerals — the proportions of a precision instrument rather than a piece of jewellery.

Nearly a century later, the size that made it strange has made it modern, and the design has needed almost no revision. That is a rare thing.

The 7-Day Automatic — IW500712

This is the reference most people should buy, and the blue lacquered dial version is among the best-looking watches IWC has made.

At 42.3mm it is large, but the case is thin, the bezel is narrow, and the lugs are elegantly proportioned rather than slabby. It wears far better than the number implies — this is a genuine dress-adjacent watch at a diameter that would be a sports watch anywhere else.

The movement is the argument

Inside is IWC's in-house calibre 52010 — a seven-day, twin-barrel automatic. Two things about it are worth understanding.

Seven days of power reserve means something practical. Take it off Friday evening, pick it up the following Friday, and it is still running with the correct time. A watch you can leave for a week without resetting is a genuinely different ownership experience from a watch you must wind or wear every two days.

Pellaton winding. IWC's proprietary automatic winding system uses a cam and pawls rather than conventional reversing wheels, and it winds in both directions of rotor movement — an efficient design that was invented in the 1940s and remains distinctive. In the current generation, the critical wear components are made of ceramic, which addresses the one historical criticism of the system.

There is a display back, which on this movement is worth having: the twin barrels and the Pellaton mechanism are visible and legible in a way that most automatic movements are not.

Take it off on Friday. Pick it up the following Friday. It is still running, still correct. That is not a specification, it is a different relationship with the object.

The Perpetual Calendar — IW503302

Now the harder question, because a perpetual calendar is a substantial step in price, size, complexity and long-term commitment.

IWC's perpetual is a genuinely important piece of watchmaking. In the mid-1980s Kurt Klaus designed a perpetual calendar module of remarkable elegance: it accounts for month lengths and leap years mechanically, is programmed to run correctly until 2499, and — the part that matters most in daily use — the entire calendar is set from the crown.

That last point deserves emphasis. Most perpetual calendars are adjusted using recessed pushers in the case that require a special tool and a careful sequence. Get the sequence wrong and you can damage the movement. The IWC advances everything from the crown, in order, which means an owner can actually correct it after the watch has stopped without visiting a watchmaker.

The moon phase display is accurate to roughly one day's drift in 577 years. It is a double moon, showing the phase as seen from both hemispheres.

The honest counterargument

A perpetual calendar is a maintenance relationship. Consider before you buy:

  • It must be kept running or reset. If it stops, you must advance it forward, day by day, to the current date. On a watch stopped for three months this is a genuinely tedious exercise. Owners of multiple perpetuals keep them on winders for exactly this reason.
  • Service is more expensive and takes longer. A calendar module adds significant labour and there are fewer independents willing to work on one.
  • It is larger. At 44.2mm, this is a big watch — noticeably more than the seven-day.
  • It depreciates harder. Complicated watches from houses that are not Patek or Lange typically recover a smaller proportion of retail. This is not a criticism of IWC; it is a fact about the market for complications.

My honest recommendation for most buyers: the seven-day. It is the better daily watch, the better value, and the version of this design closest to what the two Portuguese merchants actually asked for. Buy the perpetual because you genuinely want a perpetual calendar, not because it is the more expensive Portugieser.

A word on the Portofino

IW544801, the Vintage Portofino Hand-Wound, is a different proposition worth knowing about. At 46mm it is enormous, and it is hand-wound — no rotor, no automatic mass, which is precisely why the case can be as thin as it is.

It came from IWC's Vintage Collection, a series that revisited the brand's own archive properly rather than decoratively. On the right wrist it is one of the most striking watches IWC has produced, and it is emphatically not for everyone. If you have a large wrist and an interest in hand-wound watches, handle one.

What to check before buying

  1. Lacquered dial condition. The blue lacquer on the IW500712 is applied in layers and is beautiful. It is also unforgiving — check under raking light for hairlines, dust inclusions or any dulling.
  2. Power reserve behaviour. Wind it fully, run it, and confirm it genuinely holds around seven days. A short reserve indicates barrel or mainspring wear.
  3. On the perpetual: verify every indication. Date, day, month, year and moon phase should all agree with reality. A perpetual displaying the wrong year has either been set incorrectly or has a module fault, and the two require very different conversations.
  4. Strap and deployant. IWC's alligator straps and folding clasps are costly. Check the clasp for wear and confirm the original buckle is present.
  5. Case geometry. The Portugieser case has clean, sharp lug edges that are among the first things lost to polishing. Inspect at an angle.
  6. Service history. Confirm calibre and last service. Seven-day movements with twin barrels benefit from being kept to interval.
