Zenith makes the most technically interesting chronograph movements in the industry and has spent sixty years being underappreciated for it. That is the opportunity.
In 1969 three groups raced to produce the first automatic chronograph. Zenith's entry was called El Primero — "the first" — and while the question of who genuinely got there first is still argued, one fact is not in dispute: Zenith's was the most technically ambitious of the three, and the only one running at five beats per second.
That frequency — 36,000 vibrations per hour against the usual 28,800 — allows the chronograph to measure to a tenth of a second, and gives the seconds hand a sweep so smooth it appears continuous. It was a considerable engineering achievement in 1969 and remains a distinguishing one now.
The story that should be better known
In 1975, during the quartz crisis, Zenith's then-owners decided mechanical watchmaking was finished and ordered the El Primero tooling destroyed and the movement discontinued.
A watchmaker named Charles Vermot disagreed. Over several weeks he dismantled the tooling — presses, cams, cutting tools, plans — and hid it in a sealed attic room above the workshop, telling almost no one.
When mechanical watches returned in the 1980s and demand for a high-frequency automatic chronograph reappeared, Zenith was the only company in a position to supply one. Vermot's attic was opened, the tooling was intact, and production resumed.
Every El Primero made since exists because one employee decided his employer was wrong and acted on it. It is one of the genuinely great stories in this industry, and it is true.
He was ordered to destroy the tooling. He hid it in an attic instead. Every El Primero made since 1984 exists because of that decision.

What makes it distinctive
The El Primero 3600 inside is a development of the original that finally does the obvious thing with the high frequency: the central chronograph seconds hand sweeps the full dial once every ten seconds, rather than once a minute. The ceramic bezel is graduated in tenths accordingly.
The result is that you can genuinely read a tenth of a second off the dial. Most watches claiming 1/10th capability require you to infer it. This one shows you.
Around sixty hours of power reserve, 41mm, three coloured sub-dials on a white dial — grey, blue and anthracite, a colour scheme carried directly from the 1969 A386. That tri-colour arrangement is one of the most recognisable dial layouts in watchmaking, and it exists because Zenith needed three visually distinct registers and chose to solve it with colour rather than texture.
Who it is for
Someone who wants a steel sports chronograph with genuine historical weight and a movement that is more interesting than the obvious alternatives — and who would rather not participate in a waiting list to get one.
Defy El Primero 21, Titanium 44mm
A completely different exercise, and the most technically extreme watch in this article.
Two escapements
The Defy El Primero 21 contains two entirely separate regulating organs. One runs the timekeeping at the conventional 5Hz. The second exists only to drive the chronograph, and it runs at 50Hz — 360,000 vibrations per hour, ten times faster than the movement running the time.
The consequence is that the chronograph measures to one hundredth of a second, and the central chronograph hand makes a complete revolution of the dial once every second.
Watching it run is genuinely arresting. The hand does not tick and does not sweep — it circles the dial continuously, once per second, which is unlike anything else you will see on a wrist.
The engineering trade-off, stated honestly
Running an escapement at 50Hz consumes enormous energy, which is why the chronograph has its own dedicated barrel with a power reserve measured in minutes rather than hours. The chronograph is for timing events, not for leaving running.
The separation is the elegant part: because the chronograph has its own power source and its own escapement, running it does not affect the accuracy of the timekeeping at all. On a conventional chronograph, engaging the mechanism draws on the same barrel and can measurably reduce amplitude.
Who it is for
Someone who finds the engineering itself compelling. This is not a subtle watch and it is not a versatile one — 44mm of titanium with a skeletonised dial and a hand circling once a second is a specific taste. But it is one of very few watches in production that does something genuinely novel rather than something familiar done well.

For most buyers, the Chronomaster Sport. It is the more complete watch, it wears far better, and the connection to the 1969 original is direct rather than thematic.
The Defy is the second Zenith — bought because you already understand what the company does and want the piece that demonstrates what it can do when it stops being sensible.
Why Zenith is undervalued
Worth being explicit, because it is the real argument here.
Zenith is a manufacture — it designs and produces its own movements, which is rarer than marketing language suggests. It owns one of the twentieth century's most important chronograph calibres. It has continuous production history since 1865. And it trades, on the secondary market, well below houses whose technical contribution is considerably smaller.
The reason is straightforward: Zenith has never had a hype cycle. There is no waiting list, no allocation game, no social media moment. That kept prices sensible on the way up and meant there was nothing to give back on the way down — see why premiums compressed.
For a buyer who wants the watch rather than the queue, this is exactly the situation you want to find.
What to check before buying
- Chronograph operation. Start, stop, reset. Hands must return precisely to zero. On the Defy, confirm the 1/100th hand behaves correctly and that its dedicated reserve indicator works.
- Power reserve. Wind fully and verify against specification. High-frequency movements are demanding on mainsprings.
- Service history. El Primero calibres are robust but they run fast, and a movement operating at 36,000 vph benefits from being kept to interval. Confirm when it was last serviced and by whom.
- Ceramic bezel on the Chronomaster Sport. Check the edge for chips. Ceramic will not scratch but it will chip.
- Case geometry. Zenith cases have defined brushed and polished zones. Inspect at an angle for refinishing — see overpolishing.
- Bracelet stretch, and confirm all links are present.
